NatureMetrics has acquired the environmental DNA business of Canada-based Precision Biomonitoring. The deal was signed on 31 March 2022 and will see nine leading experts in the field of DNA-based biomonitoring joining the NatureMetrics family.
NatureMetrics is the world-leading provider of environmental DNA (eDNA) based biodiversity monitoring to further expand the global reach of our nature data services. It uses DNA technology to identify the range of species in ecosystems around the world with unprecedented speed and scale.
The company is based in Surrey Research Park in the UK where it opened the world’s largest commercial, state-of-the-art eDNA laboratory in 2021. It has already delivered product in 78 countries and has staff based in the UK, Italy, Spain, South Africa and Australia.
Katie Critchlow, NatureMetrics CEO, said, “I am delighted to be opening our second office and lab in the North America region. Our list of global clients has grown rapidly in the last 18 months as more companies increasingly recognise the need for better data on nature to help them play their role in tackling the global biodiversity crisis.”
“Having a presence in North America means we can better serve our existing clients in the region and grow our impact by supporting even more businesses to manage their nature-related risks and to transition to a nature positive economy.”
Steve Crookes, one of the founders of Precision Biomonitoring, is now the Head of Product for NatureMetrics’ North America operations. He said, “Environmental DNA is changing the way we monitor biodiversity. I am excited to be joining the NatureMetrics team and working with their team of eDNA experts to further expand the reach of our technology to more businesses in Canada and the USA.”
NatureMetrics has worked with 480+ clients including renewable energy companies, companies in the extractives, infrastructure and water sectors, conservation groups and private and public sector banks looking to manage their risks when financing site-based industries with nature-related risks. It helps them monitor the nature-related impacts and risks associated with their activities and support global efforts to protect our natural world.
NatureMetrics will immediately roll out its product offering to the region. These include biodiversity surveys for water, soil and marine sediments for both one-off environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and long-term monitoring of nature related risks and impacts. NatureMetrics aims to put great biodiversity data into the hands of our clients to enable better decisions for business and nature.
