The Nature Tech Alliance (NatureMetrics, Salesforce, ERM and Planet) has today launched a white paper at COP16 outlining a roadmap for large corporates looking to become leaders in managing and reporting their nature impact at enterprise level.
Charting the journey of 18 major corporates as they grapple with a new era of nature reporting, the paper equips businesses with the practical know-how to get ahead.
Through interviews with the c-suite, it assesses the current state of corporate biodiversity measurement, management, and disclosure. Most importantly, the paper provides practical insights for Chief Sustainability Officers and Chief Technology Officers as they guide their organizations through the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Seven critical insights on corporate nature action are covered in the paper:
- Nature risk is both global and highly local
- The link between nature risk and enterprise risk is still under-developed
- Lack of corporate decision-maker and investor understanding hinders nature-positive growth
- Companies are moving from “do no harm” to “net positive”
- Financial institutions are lagging behind other sectors but have the potential to scale nature-positive investments
- Outcome-based metrics are the future, but few have figured it out
- Data fragmentation is the biggest barrier, not a lack of technology
Key learnings from the paper will be discussed at an exclusive event at Bloom at COP16 with leaders from the Nature Tech Alliance. Representatives from the Nature Tech Alliance, including Pippa Howard, Chief Nature Strategist at NatureMetrics, are attending COP16 to speak with corporates, NGOs and policy-makers about the opportunity to embed advanced technologies into nature reporting and rapidly drive action within their organisations.
Pippa Howard, Chief Nature Strategist at NatureMetrics comments:
“We’re seeing many organisations in paralysis—unsure where to begin, overwhelmed by nature’s complexity and the number of ways to measure it.
“However, there is hope and progress being made. The technology now exists to help companies convert the complexities of nature into simple insights to inform good decisions and support disclosure.
“Large corporates - from Nestle to Unilever – are coming to us to understand how they can gain deep insights into biodiversity at site-level; so they have the data and insights to really drive change for the better.”
The Nature Tech Alliance was forged at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2024 to help companies harness advanced data and technology to tackle their most urgent nature challenges.
The Alliance offers an integrated toolkit covering the full spectrum of nature reporting requirements: from setting science-based targets to managing supply chain biodiversity disclosure at enterprise level.
